That’s what 40 Nights Photography is all about.
My style of photography is about creating connections. Without connections, there is just the superficiality of the moment.
When it comes to weddings, that’s a unique challenge. Sure, weddings are naturally happy, fun events full of color and laughter. And yes, weddings are great fun.
Marriage, though, well…that’s a really serious commitment. It’s an adventure, one with unexpected twists and turns of every kind. My pictures reflect those intricacies.
Taking pictures that honor your commitment in all of its fun, passion, and yes, seriousness, means seeing weddings differently than most photographers. That’s why once in a while you’ll see some unsmiling brides and grooms amongst the happy and joyful moments.
Don’t get me wrong, though — we have a blast together. Keep reading to find out more about how I see pictures differently.
I yearn to get better at this craft by emulating photographers I admire, such as the heartfelt, emotionally complicated work of my mentors, Keith Carter and Doug Beasley.
That approach means working a lot harder and being brutally honest with myself and the people I work with. In this era of reality TV dedicated to wedding dresses, wedding cakes, wedding planning…in other words, the Pinterest Industrial Complex, sometimes people lose site of what the wedding is all about — the marriage, and the people who contribute most to that marriage.
Now, wedding dresses and cakes are all well and good, and it’s great fun to make fantastic pictures of those symbols of your day. But getting past the surface shimmer and taking pictures of something deeper is arduous.
That means getting to know people. I invest a great deal of my own time with couples, especially during the engagement sessions. These shoots often turn into full-blown adventures that span several hours (and sometimes a snack or a drink…or both), during which we all laugh and get an idea of who we are as people.
The quality of the pictures reflects that personal investment. It’s a commitment that I make to everyone who calls me to be a part of one of the most important days of their lives.
